Searching for my next Unicorn – Buying the Perfect Horse

When I lost my gelding in the summer of 2020 I was really sad, how would I ever find another unicorn like him. He was kind, gentle, and had the sweetest personality you could ever want. And just like that he was gone. I hadn’t really thought much about replacing him as my riding had changed when my kids lost interest in the horses. Well beside bringing girls over to show them their horse! Summer slowly faded away with my empty pasture and I only dreamed of finding my next unicorn.

I occasionally looked at some of the horses for sale groups on social media but nothing really jumped out at me. Nothing screamed this is your Next Unicorn! One of my close girlfriends was actively looking for a new horse for her dad so I kinda had an ear open to what she was finding. She from time to time would forward me a few that she was looking at but again nothing grabbed my attention. Over the Christmas holiday break I did stumble across a horse that peaked my interest. If you want to hear more about this have a listen to horse podcast #92. When I was corresponding with the owner she referred to this mare as Your Next Unicorn. It was the magic words I was waiting for.

The Long Path to Buying the Perfect Horse

Now that mare didn’t work out but pandora’s box had been opened. So I needed to find my Next Unicorn. So over the course of a few weeks I made many phone calls, emails, social media messages and all ended in disappointment. Until that magical moment when my facebook messenger dinged. Someone was reaching out to me with a horse they thought might check all the boxes I was looking for in my next Unicorn. And that is where this story begins of myself finding my next Unicorn!

Today’s episode is sponsored by Tapestry Equine Products

Keep it simple, that is the message owner and operator Linda Hauk want to share with her customer. Tapestry Equine products came to fruition after watching and listening to horses for many years.

As a coach with over 35 years experience, she kept her coaching and training approach simple. We teach a horse just 3 things – stop (downward transitions and half-halts), go (upward transitions, lengthen stride) and move over (all of our lateral work). That’s it. Stop. Go. Moveover.

Our horses are always talking but are we listening? That can be with regards to the bit, saddle, girth and other equipment we use on them and the training that we do with them. As a student of horsemanship and horsemastership we owe it to our horses to try our best to understand their facial, body and emotional cues.

And it is the same philosophy for the products she wanted to design

Keep It Simple

Tapestry Equine products has developed and patented 3 great products.

The spursuader the spur with kindness in mind. Great for amateurs and sensitive horses they come in both English and western styles. Next is the Tapestry comfort girth, designed for flexibility right where the horse needs it the most. This girth allows for the chest to expand and the most crucial part. This girth helps with performance and will allow the horse top move more freely. As well we have the Tapestry neck strap. Great for beginners or amateurs, it gives you something to hold on to without catching your horse in the mouth.

Information about sizing and care can be found on their website.
