Horse Podcast Ep 129: Missouri Fox Trotter – The Horse of the Ozark Mountains

Equestrian Adventuresses Travel and Horse Podcast Ep 129 - Missouri Foxtrotter - The Horse of the Ozark Mountains

Another episode of our Horse Breeds around the World Series. Today we talk about a lesser-known American breed of horses which is iconic for the state of Missouri and which was breed to ride and settle the Ozark Mountains. The settlers wanted to have a comfortable, sure footed riding horse which could be also used to pull a wagon or plough a field. But the speciality of the breed really is their comfortable gait called Foxtrot. To know more about the Missouri Fox Trotter, I am talking to Linda Vishino, horse breeder from Missouri about her favourite breed.

Horse Breeds Around the World

Different breeds and horse cultures

Today there are around 400 horse breeds in the world. Some are extremely popular such as Frisians, Thoroughbred, Arabians or Quarter Horses, whereas others are little known, such as the Caspian Pony, Noitgedachter or Marwari. Meanwhile many breeds are restricted to their home countries and some are threatened or nearly extinct. In our Horse Breeds Around the World Series we want to introduce some of the lesser known breeds to you and talk about what role they play in their home country and above all, why they should not be forgotten.

Our Guests today:

The Missouri Fox Trotter is the official horse breed of Missouri. It was bred by the early settlers who came to settle the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. They needed a versatile, comfortable and sure-footed horse which they could ride and farm with. They combined stock horses with gaited breeds and created the Missouri Fox Trotter. Today the breed is popular as a trail horse but is also used to work cattle and successful in the show ring. It is a gaited horse, exhibiting -besides walk, trot and canter- a special gait called the fox trot.
