Today I am talking about a valuable skill for trail riders: Ponying Horses. This basically means, leading a horse while riding another. It is a skillset which comes in handy while training young horses, leading a packhorse, riding with a young child or a beginner or bringing home the horse of an injured rider. In short, every trail rider should know how to pony a horse and every horse should get used to being ponied or having another horse being ponied alongside him. Beside it is a fun way of going out on trail with not one but two horses and it really increases your horsemanship.

A Basic Trail Skill – Ponying Horses
One of my favourite training methods for my young & inexperienced horses to get them used to a lot of different trail riding situations.
The term ponying horses must not be confused with the term pony horse from the racecourse, this denotes the horse leading the racehorse.
In trail terminology, a pony horse is the horse which is being led by the rider.

It is the perfect way to endure the -hopefully- last few months of lockdown and Covid-19 Travel Restriction and it will transport you to the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, the ruggedness of the Kingdom in the Sky Lesotho, or let you enjoy the world looking through the lyre-shaped ears of the Indian Marwari horses.
