As little as possible, as much as necessary!
Leg protection can be necessary and it can be beneficial for your horse. Horses which tend to brush or over reach absolutely need something to prevent injury.
Also if you ride over difficult terrain with rocks, roots or underbrush which can potentially hurt your horse, it is recommendable to protect your horse’s legs let alone if you jump cross country jumps.
However, many horse have good, sound legs and know how to take care of them. They do not require any leg protection and it is not beneficial for them as heat tends to get trapped, overheating tendons and ligaments.
So always ask yourself: Does my horse require leg protection when I go out on trail? Talk to your vet and make it a habit to know your horse’s legs inside out.
