Working Equitation – The Equestrian Sport, many riders don’t know about!

Working Equitation is a relatively new equestrian discipline which is based on the traditional working horsemanship of Southern Europe. Its countries of origin are Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. Due to modernisation, the tradition of working or tending cattle on horseback has almost disappeared. Working Equitation is also the attempt to keep these traditions alive, the horsemanship, the attire and the horse breeds. The first competitions started in the 1990s in Southern Europe and within ten years the discipline arrived in Central Europe. In Great Britain the first competitions were held in 2000 and already in 2002 there was a British team at the First World Championship in Beja, Portugal. Germany established their first Working Equitation Association in 2008 and in the USA two rival organisation finally merged into one National Working Equitation Organisation in 2020 after Working Equitation was considered to be the fastest growing Equestrian discipline in the USA.

Wherever you are, Working Equitation is definitely a fun sport for you and your horse and everyone can compete, regardless of the breed of horse you ride.
