Horse Riding Adventures in Mongolia – Where the Horse Embodies the Human Soul

Sabine takes guests on horse riding adventures in Mongolia. They trek into wild landscapes and beautiful grasslands that have been the home of nomadic herders for millennia. She had a passion for horses since childhood. Yet horse riding had been an unattainable tenet for her until she came to Mongolia. Pretty soon after arrival, she got on horseback, using the opportunities of working with rural livestock herders in the vast countryside. Mongolian horses don’t need clinics to learn stepping over logs and crossing creeks. In navigating wilderness terrain they are skilled like wild animals. At the same time, they are of great character, responsive and easy-going in their conduct with riders.

Mongol Derby Interview with Previous Competitors

EQA interviewed several adventuresses who competed in the “World’s Longest and Toughest Horse Race,” the Mongol Derby. They reveal their biggest mistakes and most successful strategies in this grueling race, which takes place over 1,000 kilometers of Mongolian steppes and re-enacts the Genghis Khan messenger “pony express.” You ride semi-wild Mongolian horses and swap horses every 40km. During the Derby, you’re only allowed 5kg of gear and must rely on your own navigation and wits to find your way to each horse station and eventually the finish line. It’s an intense race with riders from around the world competing for bragging rights and a completion, of which many fail to accomplish.

Mongol Derby Packing List

If you’ve signed up for the Mongol Derby, the “world’s longest and toughest horse race” spanning 1,000 kilometers on semi-wild Mongolian horses, then you might be experiencing a bit of panic over what to pack for the Mongol Derby. After all, you’re only allowed 5 kg worth of gear! That’s not much considering you’ll be on your own (mostly) for 7-10 days in the middle of the Mongolian steppes.
