Portugal – Adventures with the Adventuress

Because any good horsey adventure always starts with seeing other horses right? That’s just what Heather and Kari did while get acclimatized to the time change from Canada to Portugal. They tried all the Portuguese food especially those little tarts they visited the museum of carriage. Which was amazing seeing carriage throughout the years, there were also saddles, stirrups and even spurs from across the centuries.

A top spot to visit while in Lisbon for any horsey fan is the The Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre (Portuguese School of Equestrian Art) . This is a Portuguese institution dedicated to the preservation of the equestrian arts, in the Portuguese tradition. It is one of the “Big Four”, the most prestigious classical riding academies in the world. We got up close to these beautiful horses, toured the barns and even got to watch some warm up and practice sessions.

Portugal – Riding

Once we had left the big city we met up with our group for a 7 days of galloping beaches, trotting through the cork forest, climbing tall hills and enjoying the companionship of our crew. We were all fortunate to be mounted with exceptional lusitano horses from grey, bays and even a few chestnuts. They were our trusty steeds for the next 6 days. The saddles were older military ones with an English fit and style but with a comfy padding covered in sheepskins.
