Horses play an important role in almost all cultures around the world, ancient as well as modern. In mythology they are usually depicted as powerful animals, associated with the gods or the spirit realm. Shamans often used them to travel to the otherworld and they serve as symbols of power, faith or the divine. In northern mythology horses have been associated with the gods and their names and deeds recorded in the Eddas. The most famous horse is of course Odin’s eight-legged Sleipnir, the best of the horses but there are many more.

Horses are powerful animals but there is a limit to how much weight they can carry on their backs. Despite extensive studies, this is still a heated debate and different arguments are put forth. Fact is, horses were not meant to carry people on their backs so we need to prepare and train them for this task. Burdening them with excessive weight for a long time can lead to damage of their tendons, bones and joints. What is too much weight and how can we help our horses carry us?
